If a head isn't flat, it will fail.
That's why it blew in the first place.
For nearly 20 years, RI Engineering has offered the most advanced resurfacing technology available and has been resurfacing automotive engine heads for large dealerships and small repair shops in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Lapping a cylinder head produces superior flatness and finish, and FAR exceeds factory specs. Traditional machine shops can't touch our tolerances.
Engine work is expensive.
RI Engineering takes the pain out of "machining" your head. You want your head done in days, not weeks, and getting a cylinder head lapped is economical, fast, clean and does not require stripping the head.
Pull it and hand it to us. You shouldn't question if you want your head resurfaced because of price.
Cylinder head lapping is superior to automotive machine shop head milling, head grinding, head decking, head planing, or fly-cutting in nearly every way.
Our typical flatness less than .001" (one thousandths of an inch) over the ENTIRE surface of the cylinder head, end to end.
Traditional engine resurfacing via machining usually can't hold such tight tolerances and may yield significantly less accurate results, as much as .010" out of flat and parallel end to end. Such inaccuracy is inviting another blown head gasket. Lapping requires no leveling or shimming like on a milling or grinding machine. Belt sanding or do-it-yourself cylinder head resurfacing is risky, and honestly the worst thing you can do.
Let the flatness experts at RI Engineering in Shirley Massachusetts provide you with the flattest mating surface possible for your engine.
With lapping, you never need to disassemble your head. Leave the valves, springs, plugs, cams, gears, etc in place. Pull the head and bring it in. As long as the head surface sits flat on a table, it can be lapped.
With today's light weight aluminum cylinder heads going into high tech, high performance, tight tolerance engines, manufacturers are demanding tighter flatnesses across both the length and width of the head sealing surface, along with a higher quality, more consistent surface finish. These factors are critical for a good seal whether using OEM or aftermarket gaskets. Our process yields consistent results meeting or exceeding most OEM specifications with superior flatness and finish. Lapping creates a random, non directional matte finish. This means no head milling or fly cutting ripples, ridges, tool marks, or deep scratches, or worse, belt sanding digs and uneven surfaces that have the potential to cause leaks and a repeated blown head gasket.
Head lapping is been used by many high end car manufacturers and performance engine rebuilders to create their superior gasketless sealing surface designed to withstand extreme engine stresses. Now this same technology can be applied to any engine head: small or large, old or new, import or domestic. Be it a motorcycle head, marine head, or small engine head. Now there is no need to worry if your newly resurfaced head is flat enough or if that weird machining mark is ok. Say goodbye to the old straight edge and flashlight test. The engine BLOCK flatness is now the weak point.
As with any engine work, mechanics' mistakes can be made. Scratches or dings in the head sealing surface can jeopardize the viability of the cylinder head. Automotive machine shop head milling can take days or even weeks, and for small defects can be overkill. Cylinder head lapping is quick, cost effective, and removes absolute minimum stock.
